Keep a regular routine.
One thing that helps infants learn when it's time to go to sleep is a regular bedtime routine. This predictable routine is a cue for newborns that it's time to go to sleep.
Having a recurring bedtime sleep routine means doing the same thing each time you put your baby down for an afternoon nap or evening sleep. Commonly suggested routines are such things as giving your infant a bath, before reading a story, then putting the child into the crib.
Another helpful sleep hint might be to put lotion on the baby while singing a recognized favorite lullaby, and then away into the crib. It doesn't really matter what your bedtime routine is, as long as it is comforting, loving, and relaxing.
