The use of calming white-noise is a proven sleep inducer.
The general thinking now however, is that too much quite can actually be counter-productive. Here's the dilemna though, only sounds of the right kind must be provided. As your child's mind develops, delicate neurons and brain cells are growing and developing every moment of the day, and night.
During this time the use of a helpful CD, like Hush Little Baby®, which has a variety of constantly shifting sound-scapes, will be a big help.
Studies have shown that mild stimulation of the brain while resting is a healthy and necessary part of the growth process for infants.
Calming, but varied, tones not only mask undesired household noises (which might startle the baby awake), but they provide much needed aural stimulation as well.
Set a boombox or small CD player nearby, and if possible set it in constant "loop" mode (if your player has this). Remember to keep the volume at a low level, so as not to overpower your own ability to hear your infant.
If using a baby moniter (always recommended), make sure to place it closer to the baby than the CD player is, again maintaining your ability to successfully hear your child. Hope these helped!
